Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make Family Eye Care Associates – St. Clair Shores the leading provider of vision care products and services in St. Clair Shores.


Dr. Robert W. Shick, Jr, OD

Dr. Shick is a 1997 graduate of the Illinois College of Optometry and has had extensive Low Vision training at the Illinois Eye Institute, as well as from the Illinois Center for Rehabilitation and Education. Dr. Shick provided care at the Optometric Institute and Clinic of Detroit, where he held a position on its Board of Directors. He is a member of the Metropolitan Detroit Optometric Society as well as the American Optometric Association and their Low Vision Sections. Dr. Shick is also a Vision Consultant for the Macomb Intermediate School District.   Dr. Shick specializes in difficult to fit contact lenses for keratoconus, post-surgical cornea surgery and other corneal dystrophies.  He is also a member of the Eastpointe Rotary Club and is active with St. Hubert Catholic Church.


Dr. Gregory G. Kalkofen, OD

Dr. Kalkofen is a 1998 graduate of the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University. He received his training at the Grand Rapids Veterans Hospital, Michigan State University, and the Eye Institute at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital. He was valedictorian of his graduating class. Dr. Kalkofen specializes in Primary Eye Care and specialty contact lens fitting.

He is a member of the Metropolitan Detroit Optometric Society, American Public Health Association, Michigan Optometric Association, and the Lions Club.

Dr. Kalkofen grew up in Sterling Heights and attended Warren De La Salle. He attended Michigan State University for his undergraduate studies. He and his wife have two sons.


Dr. Michael Breza, OD

Dr. Breza is a 1998 graduate of the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University. He has received training at the Veterans Hospital in Detroit and the Beaumont Eye Institute in Royal Oak. He was the recipient of the first Student Leader of the Year Award 1996. Prior to practicing at Family Eye Care he was nominated twice for Doctor of the Year at D.O.C. Optics Corporation.  Additionally, he has been on two international missions to provide vision care to the needy in Mexico treating over 14,000 patients.

Dr. Breza specializes in evaluating eye-disease, fitting glasses and specialty contacts, and LASIK co-management. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Michigan Optometric Association.

Dr. Breza is a guest lecturer for the University of Detroit Physicians Assistant Program. He grew up in Utica and attended Utica High School. He attended Oakland University for his undergraduate studies.  He is an active member in his church and volunteers his time off for various projects and ministries.


Dr. Kyler Popp, OD

kyler popp headshotDr. Popp is a 2020 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He received honors during his clinical rotations at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia. He also received training at the Detroit Veterans Hospital and Balian Eye Institute in Rochester, MI.

Dr. Popp specializes in ocular surface disease, cataract co-management, myopia management, and glaucoma. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Michigan Optometric Association.

Dr. Popp grew up in Sterling Heights and attended Warren De La Salle. He attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate studies. During his free time, he enjoys boating, watching Michigan and Detroit sports, and golfing. He and his wife enjoy spending time with family and friends.


Dr. William Lakin, OD (retired)

Dr. D. William Lakin has retired after 40 years of providing eye health care services in Macomb County. He received his Doctorate in Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1980. Dr. Lakin then joined his father Dr. Donald H. Lakin, along with Dr. Owen Dueweke and Dr. Fred VonGunten, in practice at the original offices located on Kelly Road in Eastpointe. Over the next 40 years, Dr. Lakin assumed the role of President and CEO and the practice grew thanks to his dedicated leadership and unyielding work ethic.

Throughout his career, Dr. Lakin was actively involved in numerous professional organizations. He served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Optometric Association and acted as President from 1995 to 1996. In 1996, Dr. Lakin was named Optometrist of the Year by the Michigan Optometric Association. Dr. Lakin was a member of the Michigan State Board of Examiners of Optometry. He was appointed by former Governor Rick Snyder as a member of the Ferris State University Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2014. Dr. Lakin’s commitment to building community extended beyond his professional role as an exemplary healthcare professional. He has served the residents of Macomb County as a member of the Clinton Township Kiwanis for over 35 years. He had chaired the annual Kiwanis Holiday Community Food Drive for the past 25 years. In 2018, Dr. Lakin was the recipient of The Best Individual Eye Doctor for 2018 in the Macomb Daily Readers Choice Awards.

Through his national, state, and local service, Dr. Lakin exemplifies community leadership. Above all, Dr. Lakin deeply valued building connections with all of his patients that extended out in the community, a philosophy that will continue to be a cornerstone of our practice. We the doctors and staff at Family Eye Care Associates wish Dr. Lakin a happy, healthy and well-deserved retirement.
